Plant a SeedA little seed today will grow and produce a harvest toward health in our community tomorrow!
United Way of Marathon County, Hsu Growing and Fork Farms would like to encourage people to grow plants today. This is a safe and solo volunteer option in the time of social distancing. Simple seedlings can be started in your home with most supplies in your own kitchen or garage. If you need seeds mailed to your home, please click here. Seeds will be sent as available. See example YouTube videos here. There is also a great Facebook Live Video that shows multiple kitchen container gardens.
Containers such as used egg cartons, dixi cups, plastic food containers or water bottles can be used to start seeds. Available seeds such as lettuce, basil and other vegetables will be available as supplies last. Potting soil, top soil or any dirt will work for starting seeds. The Neighbors Place and Community Garden will gladly take your plants this summer for their gardens.

Food and Shelter Needs![]() United Way provided assistance when the Warming Center moved physical locations this past month. Catholic Charities Warming Center has a new temporary location to adhere to social distancing recommendations. The temporary location is at the East Gate Hall in Marathon Park. The location was donated by the Parks and Recreation Department. Because of the Safer at Home restrictions, both the Salvation Army and the Warming Center are offering their services 24/7 and staying open.

United Way 211United Way of Marathon County’s 211 Program has seen a sharp increase in both calls and texts since March 11, 2020. Our call center has taken a total of 1,134 calls during the time period of March 11-26, 2020. Out of those calls, 395 were individuals with concerns or needs due to COVID-19. A majority of those COVID-19 calls have been people with question about the virus itself, what to do if they have a medical concern, or what the Governor’s orders mean for them. There has also been an increase in needs in the community, especially surrounding basic needs. Several calls have been from people concerned about being able to pay rent and utilities due to layoffs or reduced hours. Others are concerned with being able to afford food with their children suddenly home and not eating at school each day. We have also been able to connect callers who are in a high risk category (elderly and immunocompromised) to resources they wouldn’t otherwise need, such as grocery and prescription delivery.
As organizations in our community work to balance service provision with public safety, United Way's 211 is working to keep our resource database up to date with the most current information on health, human service, and government programs, as well as new resources that may be coming into being specifically targeting those affected by COVID-19.
211 has been designated as the official information and resource line by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services during the public health emergency. If your agency's programs have had changes in services, hours, intake procedures, or eligibility, or if your programs have been suspended, we want to know. If you have not been in touch with United Way's 211 about changes in services available to the public, please consider sharing your organization's changes with us to be communicated with Marathon County residents in need. To share changes, please email information to askus@unitedwaymc.org. Include your agency name, any changes to services you'd like added to your database listing, and who we should contact if we have clarifying questions.
211 is a FREE, confidential and referral service, available 24-7 by phone, text, email and online. Please encourage your friends and neighbors to use this resource if they need information.

Resources for Parents![]() Attention Parents! All playgrounds are closed at this time. While it's tempting to take your kids to the local playground for some outside time, it is not safe for them. The virus can live on outdoor surfaces as well. It's perfectly fine to go for a walk through our local parks, but maintain a safe distance of 6 feet from other people and stay off playground equipment, park benches and picnic tables.
If the weather isn’t good for a walk, BOKS is a physical activity program designed to reverse this public health crisis by getting kids active and establishing a lifelong commitment to health and fitness. Built on the science and research documented in the book, Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, BOKS provides free physical activity curriculum, training and support to communities looking to establish and maintain impactful fitness and nutrition programs serving the whole child. With many schools being closed and kids at home, BOKS will share as many games and activities as possible to keep kids active and happy during this difficult time. This link includes free activity packs and daily virtual workouts.
