ALICE in Wisconsin

ALICE_Report_Cover.jpgALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, lives in every community in our state, and across the country.  United Way of Wisconsin, along with local United Way's commissioned an ALICE report for the state of Wisconsin.  This data driven report, produced by United Way of New Jersey in conjunction with Rutgers University, finds that 42% of households in the state don't earn enough income to meet the needs in a survival budget.  In Marathon County, that number is slightly less at 41%.

On October 18, Charlene Mouille, United Way of Wisconsin, will be in Wausau to share the findings of the report. Learn more and register for the event today.

Volunteer for Make a Difference Day

IMG_2520.jpg

Do you want to make a difference in Marathon County? Join Volunteer Connection for Make a Difference Day 2016. Individuals and groups can help in several ways!

1.   Spend the morning raking for elderly or disabled residents who have no one to help them with the task. Bring your own rake, gloves and a few friends to help. (Those under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult.) Or sign up to rake any yards that are left over, the following week.

2.   If you have a truck or trailer, you can help haul bagged leaves to area yard waste sites in the afternoon, after Make a Difference Day or the following week.

3.   Can’t rake? Help staff the tables and orient volunteers as they arrive, or give an In-Kind gift.   Donations will be accepted at First United Methodist Church (903 3rd St.) from 8am-12noon.  Donate non-perishable food items for the Marathon County Hunger Coalition, personal care items/toiletries for the Workplace Volunteer Council’s Back to Basics program and new or gently used winter outwear (kids-adults) for the Kiwanis’s Coats for Kids program

You can register for all volunteer opportunities on-line.

Career Closet Launches Boots to Work

IMG_3208-cropped.jpg

Boots to Work is a new project of United Way Career Closet.  Individuals who have an offer of work that requires steel-toed footwear often are unable to afford the boots/shoes they need to start a new job.  Local Job Service staff, Human Resource departments and other organizations can refer clients to the Boots to Work program.  With an authorized voucher, Boots to Work will provide one pair of new or gently used steel-toed footwear.  And, if you have a pair of boots that you no longer need, please consider donating them to Boots to Work.

Please contact Tara with questions about this program.
