Raising Awareness about Basic Needs In Marathon County

HHClogofor-Andar.jpgDuring National Hunger & Homelessness Week in November 70 local residents attending a screening of the film 30 Seconds Away, a documentary about the inter-realted issues of mental illness, addiction and homelessness. The film was presented in collaboration with the AOD Partnership and NTC. While the film was shot in Milwaukee, attendees commented that it was very similar to Wausau, and helped them better understand the challenges of local residents who are struggling with the same issues.

Later that week, 32 people boarded a Metro bus for a tour of local shelters and public housing sites, to learn what services are available locally and what next steps need to be taken to reduce the number of people in our community who struggle to meet their basic needs.

Have you met ALICE?

ALICE_Report_Cover.jpgALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, lives in every community in our state, and across the country.  United Way of Wisconsin, along with local United Way's commissioned an ALICE report for the state of Wisconsin.  This data driven report, produced by United Way of New Jersey in conjunction with Rutgers University, finds that 42% of households in the state don't earn enough income to meet the needs in a survival budget.  In Marathon County, that number is slightly less at 41%.

If you would like a representative from United Way to share a short presentation about ALICE in your company, club, service or church group, please contact Sue Haupt to set up a date and time.

Volunteer for Hugs

cute jacque and jayden.jpgLooking for a volunteer opportunity with built in hugs and smiles? Volunteer to be a Reading Buddy to a kindergarten or 1st grade student and the hugs are sure to come.  As a Reading Buddy you will spend about an hour, 1-2 times per week, reading with a student that is struggling to keep pace with their classmates.  Research shows that kids who struggle to read early, continue to lag behind their peers.  It's critical to their future success to improve their reading ability as quickly as possible.  One of the best ways to do that is to have them read to an adult as frequently as possible.  You can make a difference! Currently we are seeking volunteers for the Mosinee and Marathon Elementary schools.  Please contact Pahua Moua at 715-298-5722 to learn more.
