Welcome 2018

Happy New Year2018 is here! With the new year comes a new round of resolutions...... lose weight, quit smoking (or some other unhealthy behavior), exercise more, save money, etc.

Those are all great things, and important. Our challenge to you would be to not only make resolutions that will change something for you, but to also consider a resolution that will change things for someone else. Resolve to help a neighbor--maybe you can shovel their sidewalk. Resolve to learn about something new and to share that information and passion with someone else. Resolve to give back... to your family, to your friends, to your community. Do something for someone else. Make 2018 a great year!

Early Years Coalition Marks 5th Anniversary

EYC 5 Year Celebration.jpgThe Marathon County Early Years Coalition has been working collaboratively on issues that challenge young children for 5 years.  In that time, they have accomplished so many great things. Training for child care providers, forums to work with employers, videos and marketing campaigns to educate the community, and the launch of a parent/caretaker focused website, RaiseGreatKids.org. Check out this video highlighting the accomplishments of the last 5 years.

Volunteers Needed for Point in Time Count

HHC.pngEvery January and July, volunteers with the Housing and Homelessness Coalition conduct a homelessness count in the great Wausau area. Those numbers help provide a snapshot of the number of people who are homeless in our community. Volunteers are needed to assist with the count on January 24, 2018. Volunteers will work in teams during the late evening/early morning hours to look for individuals without shelter.

The Point in Time Count will be followed by Project Connect on January 25 at the Salvation Army. Any individual who is homeless or who is having challenges meeting their basic needs is encourage to attend. Many non-profit agencies will be on hand to provide information and services.

More information is available by emailing
MaiGer Moua, Housing and Homelessness Coalition Director.

Imagine If

Boots to WorkImagine for a moment.... you have been looking for work and today you're offered a job! You are so excited to begin this next phase of your life, but there's one little problem. You need to have steel toed shoes before you can report to work. And, you just don't have the money to buy a pair. What do you do now??

Until last summer, there really weren't any options available. But, with the help of a few local businesses, Emerging Leaders' Career Closet was able to launch Boots to Work, providing steel toed work shoes so that people can start a new job. Boots to Work depends on donations of new and gently used footwear, and will use cash donations to purchase needed items. At this time there is a special need for women's steel toed shoes/boots. If you can help, with a donation of footwear or cash, please contact
Tara at the United Way office.

Stay Safe Smart in 2018

United Way RSVPIn response to increasing concerns related to personal safety, home security, fraud protection and related issues, United Way RSVP will host a “Safe Smart” program in cooperation with the Wausau Police and Fire Departments. Join us on Tuesday, January 30 from 9:30 — 11:00 am at the United Way office. You’ll find out what you can do to be safer at home, learn how to protect yourself from fraud and other criminal activity. You’ll also find out about home fire and carbon monoxide prevention, along with being prepared for a disaster or other emergency. Learn about fire extinguishers and their proper use. There will also be time for your questions along with informational handout materials.

This program is open to everyone, so bring a friend with you. Register by calling 715-298-5721 or email Tony to attend this important and highly informative community program.
