Your Gift Makes a Difference

Mom & DaughterJackie does her best to set a good example for her young daughter, Macy. She works a full time job but as a single parent she struggles to make ends meet. She often has to juggle bills and sometimes their meals are limited to mac & cheese or Ramen. Because of her full time job, Jackie does not qualify for most programs that could provide financial assistance. One day, her childcare provider suggested that she apply for a GoodStart Grant through Childcaring, a United Way funded program.

When Jackie received her GoodStart Grant, she was able to use the money saved on childcare to buy groceries and pay other bills. The grant made the difference for Jackie. She is now able to save a few dollars every week for an emergency and still provide for her daughter's needs. Your gift to United Way helps fund programs that help people right here in Marathon County. Thank you!

Disaster Volunteer Training Offered

DisaterWhen disaster strikes, members of the community want to help. But in the event of a large scale disaster in our community, volunteers must be interviewed, screened and matched with a volunteer job that fits their abilities. Organizing these volunteers is critical in a disaster recovery effort and you can help. On Thursday, March 28, United Way Volunteer Connection, along with Marathon County Emergency Government and United Way RSVP will be hosting a Volunteer Reception Center Training This two hour training program, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. will give you the tools you will need to assist in the event we experience a large scale disaster. The training is free, but space is limited. Register by calling United Way Volunteer Connection at 715-298-5719 or by emailing Krista.

Ready to Read Distributes over 8,000 Books

Ready to ReadUnited Way Ready to Read distributed over 8,000 books to children age birth to 5 in 2018. Since the program's inception in 2004, a total of 168,478 books have been distributed to children across Marathon County who might not otherwise have books of their own. Having books in the home, and daily reading to a child are two critical elements in helping a child to be ready to read when they enter school. One parent recently told us that the books they received from Ready to Read were used as a birthday gift for their child who was so excited to have books of their very own.

Books are purchased in bulk several times a year and distributed via local agencies who serve families with young children. Funding is provided by: 3Mgives, B.A. & Esther Greenheck Foundation, Wausau Breakfast Optimist Club, United Way of Marathon County, United Way Women United, UW Extension - Homemakers Club, Green Bay Packer Foundation and Peoples State Bank.

Adopt A Classroom Today!

Little Critter Image.jpgUnited Way is launching our 2019 Adopt a Classroom project. Volunteers who participated in previous years had nothing but great things to say about the project, and we're excited to bring back this fun and engaging volunteer opportunity.

For a small investment, your workplace or individual group can adopt a kindergarten classroom, provide each child a book featuring the beloved character Little Critter® and promote healthy eating with a container garden project.  Your group would be asked to provide 3-4 volunteers for 45 minutes to read the book and complete the garden activity with each classroom.  Classroom dates and times are indicated on the registration site.

Check out the registration site for more details. Use the Adopt A Classroom Online Registration to reserve your classrooms today.  Spots fill up fast, register now to guarantee your classrooms.
