Your Gifts Make A Difference

Nancy and DaughterNancy, a young single mother, arrived at The Salvation Army late last year, needing a place to live. Fortunately, the only family room at the shelter was unoccupied at the time, and she and her child had a safe place to stay. Nancy began working with her Case Manager to explore options. She received assistance from a number of programs that helped her pay for childcare and rent. She also was able to find a better paying job, which allowed her to move into an apartment. Your gifts to United Way provide temporary housing and case management for individuals and families as they get back on their feet and on the path to self-sufficiency. Thank you for helping Nancy and her family.

Emerging Leaders Smack Hunger

Smack HungerOn May 15, over 325 volunteers came together to package 48,000 servings (16,000 bags) of healthy trail mix at United Way Emerging Leaders "Smack Hunger" event. By partnering with the Marathon County Hunger Coalition, the bags of trail mix were quickly distributed to community and school-based food pantries and backpack programs throughout Marathon County – from Spencer to Hatley and just about everywhere in between. These healthy snacks will benefit children and adults in our community who struggle with food insecurity. Serve with Liberty Volunteers Help United Way

Serve With LibertyDuring the two week Serve with Liberty event in May, 37 employees at Liberty Mutual volunteered at United Way. Different groups of employees joined us on several different days each week to paint bookshelves and clean books for the Ready to Read Community Bookshelves. They also assembled Family Activity night kits and sorted and inventoried more than 3000 items donated during the Community Baby shower. Some volunteers packaged individual load packets of laundry detergent to be distributed at local shelters and agencies. Thank you Liberty Mutual employees for giving back to your community.

Donate Gently Used Children's Books

Ready to Read Book DriveUnited Way Ready to Read program has 5 (soon to be 7) Community Bookshelves at various locations. The goal of the Community Bookshelves is to increase the access to books in homes with children. Having ready access to books is crucial in a child's learning to read and loving to read. You can help! Bring gently used children's books to the United Way office at 705 S. 24th Avenue, Wausau, during regular business hours and they will be delivered to the family serving agencies where we have bookshelves. Last year over 10,000 books were collected and distributed. Board books, pre-school books, easy readers and chapter books for youth are always in high demand. Your help in keeping the bookshelves stocked is very much appreciated.
