Register today for the Second Annual 0.1K Run

Join the fun at the second annual 0.1K Run to benefit Bundles of Joy on October 12. This unique event will be held on the 400 Block (rain location former JCPenney store at Wausau Center Mall), with registration beginning at 10:00 a.m. Races will start at 11:00, with two kids' events, followed by a Costume Race--break out your best costume, a Rewind Race and a Slo-Mo Race. Awards will be presented at noon. Register today and receive a free t-shirt!

All proceeds from this event will be used to purchase emergency diapers for families in crisis in our community. Last year, Bundles of Joy distributed thousands of diapers to area families through local agencies. While resources exist to help families with food, there are few places to go if you are out of diapers and there's several days until payday.  Bundles of Joy fills that gap.

If you are unable to run, but would like to support Bundles of Joy, you can donate directly to the cause.

Help Your Neighbors on Make a Difference Day

madd.jpgMake a Difference Day is Saturday, October 26. Locally, United Way Volunteer Connection coordinates hundreds of volunteers to rake leaves for elderly or disabled Marathon County residents. This is a huge chore, and some of our neighbors don't have family to help get their yards ready for winter.

If you can help rake leaves, you can register for raking on the Volunteer Connection site. If you have a corporate or school group and would like to rake during the week prior to or the week after Make a Difference Day, that's also an option. There's also a need for individuals with a truck or trailer to haul bagged leaves to the yard waste site.
Please consider volunteering today!

United Way Welcomes New Staff

Ben & LoriHi my name is Ben Lee. I recently joined United Way as the Community Impact Director-Financial Stability and Health. I’ve spent the last decade in the corporate human resources sector and ultimately made the move to United Way because I wanted to pursue more meaningful work that had a tangible impact on our community. So far, every day has been different and I’m really excited about that prospect. I get to come to work every day and challenge myself with building a better community. I don’t know how work can get more rewarding than that.

My name is Lori Hattenhauer and I am the first Retire United Coordinator. I had been volunteering at United Way for over two years and was excited  when the Retire United position was announced. I wanted to work here because I love how United Way brings people and organizations together to work towards solutions to community-wide problems. I am most excited about building the Retire United affinity group into the thriving and vibrant entity I know it will become.

211 Updates Resource Publications

United Way 211Did you know that United Way's 211 publishes several resource guides that can help you locate resources or volunteer opportunities? Check out the Landlord List if you are looking for an apartment or home to rent. The 2019 Give and Get Help Guide is your go-to for the most popular volunteer opportunities and commonly used human services organizations/programs in our community. Think of it as a mini-211 directory. For families needing assistance at the holidays, the recently released Holiday Give and Get Help Guide is the place to learn more about local programs that can help. You'll find all of them on our website. Copies of the Give & Get Help Guide can also be picked up from Wausau Times newsstands in the community.

Congratulations Nancy Newville!

nancyn.jpgNancy Newville retired from United Way in September after 20 years of service to the organization.

Many people will recognize Nancy's smile and warm greeting from the years she spent at our front desk. Nancy also organized and managed all Summit League records for many years. Most recently she was the Administrative Assistant for the Community Impact team, managed the Ready to Read program and coordinated the Emergency Housing grants for our community.

United Way thanks Nancy for her many years of dedication and wishes her all the best as she moves on to new adventures in retirement.
