From our President

Wausau_JimWaldron.jpgI continue to be amazed with United Way of Marathon County. As we’ve gone through the last few months, the staff and volunteers have remained focused on our mission to unite people and organizations in Marathon County, to build a stronger community and strategically invest in education, financial stability and health priorities to improve lives now and into the future. The staff has found ways to work remotely and still meet the needs of the community.  During these unprecedented times, I was impressed at how the community came together to help those in need. We have teamed up with the Community Foundation and raised over $450,000 to help those disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. Our groups are meeting via video conference and audio conference to continue the important work and maintain safe working practices. Thank you to the entire team of staff and volunteers for making an impact in our community! I’m convinced that we will continue to work well and provide support where needed.

Jim Waldron, Board President

Adopt a Classroom

Adopt a Classroom.jpg

Adopt a Classroom Literacy Program continues this year, with a non-traditional approach. Companies and local businesses were scheduled to read to kindergarten classrooms in April, as school closures began and a new normal was established.  This month, United Way staff organized the supplies for Adopt a Classroom to be delivered to approximately 650 students at the Wausau School District, Newman Catholic and St. Mary’s Schools. Students will be able to grow a mini garden in a glove with their families while at home. United Way will work with DC Everest, Edgar, Marathon and Mosinee school districts in the fall.

The money will be used to purchase and distribute breakfast and healthy snack items to rural Marathon County School children to address their weekend hunger needs.

Employee Spotlight

joe spotlight.jpgJoe Tazelaar, Administrative and Finance Director

United Way of Marathon has dedicated staff committed to this community.  Over the next few months we want to introduce them to you.

Meet Joe Tazelaar, our resident IT, HR, Finance and everything else expert. Joe has been with United Way since 2016 and loves United Way because of the passionate donors and volunteers. Joe grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago, which makes him a Bears Fan. He is passionate about making others smile and laugh.  Beyond work, Joe likes to spend time with his family and watching his sons play sports and making memories on the lake. When asked to tell us something funny or unique about himself, Joe responded, "I am a 13-year-old trapped in a middle aged man’s body."

Community Response Fund

The COVID-19 Community Response Fund continues to bring essential resources and aid to our local nonprofits. The fund provides flexible funding for organizations working throughout Marathon County who are impacted by the coronavirus and the economic consequences of the outbreak. We acknowledge that the resources of local nonprofit organizations may be stressed as they provide support for those with immediate needs in this time. Applications continue to be accepted online. To date, we have awarded 36 organizations with grants totaling over $300,000.
