Perspective

Main imageWhile 2020 has presented difficult circumstances for all of us, United Way has led the charge to ensure that our most vulnerable community members continue to thrive. As the saying goes, "A rising tide lifts all boats." We aim to build a stronger community together.

Thanks to your generous contributions to the 2019 United Way Campaign and the COVID-19 Community Response Fund, along with federal grant awards, United Way has continued to improve lives by strategically investing in education, health, and financial stability initiatives in Marathon County. However, the essential needs of our community are more acute now than ever. For example, the Marathon County Hunger Coalition, an initiative of United Way, has already distributed more food in 2020 than it did in all of 2019…and we still have four months to go.

In order to continue to meet these essential needs, we need your help. The needs are significant, far exceeding the amount that United Way raises in a "normal" year. As you all kick off your 2020 workplace campaigns, please consider how you can help your community thrive during this difficult time. Thank you for helping to build a stronger community and improve lives now and in the future.

Shanna Yonke, your 2020 Campaign Chairperson, from Ruder Ware.

21 Day Equity Challenge

Throughout our United Way network, we are engaging in on-going conversations about how we can become more equitable. We recognize there is a serious need for us as individuals and organizations to become well-versed in how people are marginalized and what we can do to dismantle all forms of oppression. As part of our commitment to helping our community in its capacity to use a race equity lens, United Way has created a #21DayRaceEquityChallenge.

General Info
We will host the challenge, starting September 14 and ending October 5, via newsletters. The newsletters will offer a series of articles, videos, and podcasts about race and equity for 21 consecutive weekdays. Each challenge will be designed to develop your personal equity lens and will take you no more than 15 minutes a day (unless you choose to do more!). United Way has provided a surplus of information for you to be able to go through and find content that is interesting to you, and hopefully will spark your interest to maintain the challenge for all 21 days. The series has also taken into consideration different learning methods. For some, you may learn best by reading. For others, we know that you may learn better by listening. And lastly, you may learn best by watching videos. At the conclusion of the series we will host a listening and feedback session for those interested in participating.

Make a Difference Day

Main imageMake a Difference Day yard raking will be held the week of October 19 - October 24, 2020. United Way of Marathon County Volunteer Connection will coordinate volunteers to rake leaves for elderly or disabled Marathon County residents.

If you are interested in helping to rake leaves, you can register here. Face coverings are strongly recommended in all settings, including outdoors when it is not possible to maintain physical distancing. We recommend groups of 10 or less. We will also need individuals with a truck or trailer to haul bagged leaves to the yard waste sites. Please contact Krista for more details on this opportunity.

United We Can Going Virtual

Meeting the Needs of our Community

Over the last six months, we've been adapting our work to meet the needs of the community. I wanted to provide you an update.

At the end of March, we transitioned our staff to work virtually to ensure the health of our office and our volunteers. We partnered with the Community Foundation of Northcentral Wisconsin to raise money for the COVID-19 Community Response Fund. Close to $500,000 was raised  to support programs and services impacted by the pandemic.  In April, the Marathon County Hunger Coalition began delivering food to rural schools because of school closures. In May, we honored and celebrated frontline workers and participated in #givingtuesdaynow. We received more than 5,000 Thank A Healthcare Worker thank you notes and distributed them to local healthcare workers. You can still say thank you by filling out a virtual card.

In June, we held our Week of Action, transitioning from in-person to virtual and remote volunteer opportunities. During this week, each day was dedicated to a cause and community members could participate from their homes. We also launched Thank a Small Business. Another June thru August success has been our partnership with the Farmers to Families Food Box Program. In cooperation with The Neighbors' Place and the USDA we distributed 1,325 boxes of food, totaling more than 17.8 tons of food and 18,144 bottles of water, with the help of 36 volunteers.

In July, we distributed more than 2,100 masks and participated in public awareness campaigns promoting mask wearing for health and safety. Over the past few months we have hosted virtual education sessions online about COVID-19, mental health, diabetes and fraud prevention.

This past month, we took our Campaign Kick-off event VIRTUAL. United Way of Marathon County presented a LIVE, virtual event to begin our campaign season with volunteer participation and two opportunities to win. Click here to watch.
