Your Gift Makes A Difference

UW 2-1-1 Logo Andar.jpgJanet was dealing with a medical condition and was on temporary leave from work. Unfortunately, her leave was without pay. As a result, she fell behind on her rent payments and found herself threatened with eviction. She was afraid of becoming homeless and didn’t know what to do, so she called United Way’s 2-1-1 for help. An Information Specialist spoke with her about organizations in her community that offered financial assistance to those facing evictions.

A couple weeks later, Janet shared that she had received help from one of the community organizations and felt good about her finances. She was very thankful for the help she had received.

Ready to Read Builds Literacy Skills

learning-422692_960_720.jpgImproving kindergarten readiness is one of United Way's top priorities. Research shows that kids who have been read to on a frequent, regular basis have larger vocabularies and generally learn to read at a faster pace than those that haven't had that experience. One of the biggest challenges for increasing the time that parents spend reading to their children is getting books into their homes.  For many low-income familes, purchasing books is not a possibility, and getting to the library may be difficult because of transportation limitations and work schedules.  Ready to Read is changing that.

This United Way project distributes over 10,000 new, age appropriate books per year to children in our community.  Distribution is made through our program partners and other organizations that work with young families.  The book purchases are funded by grants from: B.A. & Esther Greenheck Foundation, Wausau Breakfast Optimist Club, Kiwanis Club of Greater Wausau, United Way of Marathon County, United Way Women in Action, UW-Extension-Homemakers' Club, and the Green Bay Packer Foundation.

May is Older American's Month

DSC_0045.JPGSince 1963, May has been designated as Older Americans Month, a time to celebrate the many and ongoing contributions of older adults to our communities and our nation. United Way RSVP is especially grateful for the more than 400 RSVP members who are helping build a better community through volunteer service!

On April 5, the RSVP program held their Recognition Luncheon, honoring the 51,000 hours donated by their members in 2016. The value of that volunteer service is estimated at $1.147 million. The volunteers in this photo were recognized for more than 500 hours of service to local organizations.  A complete l
