Your Gift Makes a Difference

IMG_1988.JPGDonna and Falton Fischer started volunteering with Wausau Area Mobile Meals 19 years ago when Falton retired from a long teaching career in the Wausau School District. One day every week, you’ll find them delivering meals on a regular route. In addition to providing a hot, nutritious meal to home bound residents in our community, their deliveries offer a “check-in” to ensure individuals are safe.

Several months ago they were making their regular delivery when they found one of their recipients had fallen earlier that morning and was unable to get up. She lived alone and her closest relative had visited the day before.

Fortunately, Donna and Falton were able to help her off the floor and to her couch. She insisted she was okay, that she didn’t want to bother anyone and that she felt fine. After some coaxing, she agreed to let them call an ambulance and went to the hospital to be examined. She was eventually moved to a rehab facility for therapy to gain strength and mobility.

Thanks to Donna and Falton’s timely delivery, she was quickly found and received assistance. Without her Mobile Meals delivery, she may have been on the floor for some time and the results could have been very different.

In addition to their weekly Mobile Meals route, Donna and Falton are active volunteers in their church. According to Falton, “As long as we are blessed with good health, we’ll keep active volunteering to help others. Giving back to others is the right thing to do.”

Homeless Count Held on July 26

HHC Andar.jpgThe Housing and Homelessness Coalition held their twice annual Homelessness Count during the overnight hours of July 26. Teams of volunteers were on the streets looking for individuals in need of shelter and offering them information on the Project Connect Event at The Salvation Army the next day. Volunteers identified 6 people who were homeless during the count. That number is comparable to other July counts.

Learn about the Furniture & Basic Needs Bank, Community Learning Center, Neighborhood Outreach and their Gardens. Find out about the volunteering opportunities available and enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of their facility.

The RSVP monthly Coffee Hour is provided to help our community learn about the work of our RSVP volunteer stations and volunteering opportunities while socializing over a cup of coffee, so invite a friend to join you.

Ready to Read Bookshelf Project Launced

IMG_3354.JPGOver the last few months volunteers have been building and painting bookshelves to be placed in local non-profits and organizations that serve families with young children. More than a dozen companies held book drives to fill the shelves, and over 80 volunteers helped to clean, sort and label the books. Recently the shelves were delivered and filled with books. The goal of the project is to provide free books for young children to take home, read and keep. If you are interested in learning how you can donate books or hold a book drive, please contact Krista at United Way Volunteer Connection.
