Your Gift Makes a Difference

mom reading to child.jpgStart Right Family Visitors help United Way Ready to Read get books into the homes of familes with young children. Being read to daily, from a very young age, helps to build language skills and paves the way for school success.

One mom, Jayda, told the family visitor that her 3 year old was so excited to have books to read every day. She loves story time. Jayda also said that she couldn't remember ever having a book of her own until she started school, and she never did learn to enjoy reading or school. She's determined to change that attitude for her children. Daily story time has become a highlight of their day and she's seeing growth in her children's vocabulary and attention span.

United Way Ready to Read distributes 10,000 books annually through our partners. Books are purchased with sponsorship dollars provided by: B.A. & Esther Greenheck Foundation, Wausau Breakfast Optimist Club, Kiwanis Club of Greater Wausau, United Way of Marathon County,  UUnited Way Women in Action, UW Extension - Homemakers Club, First Universalist Unitarian Church, and the Wausau Paranormal Research Society.

RSVP Day of Service

IMG_0026.JPGOn January 15 a group of 25 RSVP volunteers gathered to learn about youth hunger in our community at Blessings in a Backpack which provides food to 1,069 children weekly who struggle with having enough food to eat. The children served are K-5th graders in the Wausau and DC Everest School Districts who are ages 4-10 years old. RSVP volunteers learned about the packing process and did food packing for one of the schools as part of the service project. Thank you to all the RSVP volunteers who helped make our 2nd Annual Martin Luther King Day project such a great success.

Time to Clean your Closets

image 11.jpegIf cleaning up the clutter in your life was one of your New Year resolutions, or even if it wasn't, cleaning your closet is always a good winter activity. But, what do you do with all of the clothing you no longer need? One option is the Emerging Leaders' Career Closet. In 2017, the Career Closet helped 323 people with clothing and footwear to find or start or a new job. They accept donations of new and gently used, work appropriate clothing for both men and women.

Currently, the most needed items are men and women's steel toed footwear, khaki & black slacks for both men and women, men's belts and shoes. Donations can be dropped at the Career Closet on Tuesdays from 3-5 p.m., Wednesdays from 11-1 p.m. and Thursdays from noon-2 p.m.  During other times, donations can be delivered to the United Way office.
