CommUnity Fest Fast Approaching

United Way's signature event, CommUnity Fest, is Saturday, September 22, at the Exhibition Building at Marathon Park. There's still time to get your staff involved in this fun teambuilding event. Here are several ways to join in the fun:

  • Build a food sculpture - a traditional United We Can version, or take on a new challenge with the On The Spot Competition. All food will be distributed through the Marathon County Hunger Coalition.
  • Offer a simple kids activity and conduct a food drive in your company during the week prior to CommUnity Fest. Bring the food to the event and use it to vote for your favorite sculpture!
  • Do you have a unique company vehicle that kids might want to get an up-close look at? A big truck or tractor or trailer? If so, register your vehicle and come on down to Marathon Park.

You'll find complete information on the various categories on our website. You can also print the CommUnity Fest poster and hang it in your business or circulate it electronically to help promote the event.

RSVP Coffee Hour Focuses on Youth

2017 Kathy and child .Mosinee.jpgPlan to attend the RSVP Coffee Hour at the Wausau School District Longfellow Administration Center, 415 Seymour Street, Wausau, on Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. This is an opportunity to learn about volunteering with the Wausau School District in their reading tutor program, be a “lunch buddy” and other volunteer areas which many RSVP members find to be such a rewarding experience. You’ll also learn about tutoring in the After School Homework Club at Weston Elementary School and the United Way Reading Buddy Program at Mosinee and Marathon Schools.

During the last school year, 26 RSVP Volunteers were involved in reading, tutoring and mentoring activities that helped 137 children achieve improved academic performance! You can make a positive difference in the life of a child.

Housing and Homelessness Coalition Conducts Count

HHC Andar.jpgThe Housing and Homelessness Coalition conducted their bi-annual Point in Time Count during the overnight hours of July 25-26. Volunteers found a total of 24 individuals (18 singles, family of 4, and 1 couple) who were identified as being homeless and sleeping in places not meant for human habitation. That compares to an average of 7 individuals in previous July counts. On July 26 over 130 individuals experiencing challenges with housing were welcomed to Project Connect where they received a warm meal and were connected to local resources to prevent homelessness.

Raise Great Kids Day 2018

Raise Great Kids DayOn August 9, twelve local organizations participated in Raise Great Kids Day. Held in partnership with Wausau Events and Marketplace Thursdays on the 400 Block, this event brought together Early Years Coalition partners and organizations involved with kids and families in our community. Free books, crafts, games, giveaways, music, story-times and more were all part of the day. This increased awareness of the Early Years Coalition’s initiative of “Talk. Sing. Read. Play. Every Child. Every Day.” Partner organizations shared information about local resources for children and families and over 400 information bags were handed out to attendees.
