Family Friendly Survey

Making Marathon County More "Family-Friendly"  Communitywide Survey. Click here to take the survey.

Marathon County Early Years Coalition, WIPPS Research Partners launch community survey, findings to be shared with public, area employers.

A Marathon County partnership of over 50 organizations advocating for early childhood success and family well-being has launched a “family-friendly” survey to gauge how residents view work-life balance in the workplace. Survey results will be used to help local businesses and nonprofits make the community and workplaces more family-friendly.

The Marathon County Early Years Coalition focuses on ensuring child and family well-being through a countywide effort that will encourage and support early childhood success. “This survey will help us understand what people living and working in Marathon County value in a family-friendly workplace,” said Dean Dietrich, founding member of the Marathon County Early Years Coalition chair. “Using this information, we can work together as a community to improve the lives of families and, in particular, young children, providing them with the best start for a productive life.”

Key questions that will be answered in the survey include:
• What kinds of family-friendly workplace policies and programs are currently available, and how are they viewed by employees?
• How much do employees value family-friendly workplace policies and programs compared to other job factors?
• What family-friendly policies and benefits do employers rank as among the most important in their business goals to attract and retain employees?
• Where are opportunities to work across sectors to address community needs?

The easy-to-use online and mobile survey will direct survey takers to a series of multiple choice questions, with space at the end for individual comments. The survey is confidential and anonymous and takes about fifteen minutes to complete. Any person currently employed, including self-employed, living or working Marathon County is encouraged to take the survey by visiting wipps.org/employee.

“WIPPS researchers have examined national trends and received input from employers and employees to design a survey that will provide meaningful information for employers to improve attraction and retention of their workforce, said Eric Giordano,” WIPPS executive director.
All survey findings will be compiled into a final report that will be shared with interested stakeholders, including the public.

For more information on the survey, contact Eric Giordano at WIPPS: 715-261-6388 or email: egiordano@uwsa.edu

Point-in-Time count

On Wednesday, January 22, 2020, The Housing & Homelessness Coalition, an initiative of United Way of Marathon County, in partnership with North Central Community Action Program (NCCAP) conducted the Point-in-Time count, as required by the Wisconsin Balance of State.

The purpose of this count is to capture a snapshot and account for individuals currently not sheltered. The count took place between the hours of 11:00 pm and 3:00 am in Marathon County.

The count resulted in seven individuals being counted as unsheltered or living outside, in addition to 73 individuals currently living in the various shelters in our community. This puts our total at 80 individuals considered homeless on January 22, 2020. This number strictly reflects individuals that we can make contact with.

We’d like to thank our all of the volunteers that make this count possible. Without their commitment to the community, we couldn’t perform such important work. We’d also like to thank the Wausau Police Department, the Marathon County Sherriff Department, the Crisis Assessment Response Team (CART), the Parks and Recreation Department and First united Methodist Church. All of these organizations play an important role in helping us complete this work. Without such dedicated community partners our efforts would not be as fully realized.

Additionally, the Housing & Homelessness Coalition held Project Connect on Thursday, January 23, 2020. Project Connect is an informational and resource event held at the Salvation Army, where individuals that are experiencing homelessness or are on the verge of homelessness can connect with community resources to help them achieve housing stability.

  • 13 partner agencies shared their resources with individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk.
  • 105 free lunches were provided by the Salvation Army.
  • 8 free haircuts were given by stylists with The State College of Beauty Culture.
Again, we thank all of our partners that made this event possible. Tackling the issue of Homelessness is a community effort. The dedication, empathy, and compassion of those involved in Project Connect is what makes it the event that it is.

We stay committed to working with all of our partners to eliminate homelessness in Marathon County. We look forward to continuing this work with all of you. It takes a village to solve these issues and we are thankful for all of your commitment and support.

Thank you,

United Way Volunteer Spotlight

Jane BlickBecoming comfortable with new experiences is something Jane Blick has learned through the years. Her journey through the volunteer landscape has taken her to many new places where she has served in many roles.

After moving to the area later in life, Jane was looking to make meaningful connections when her husband retired. She began assisting in record-keeping for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program at United Way as an office volunteer in 2010.  Since its inception at that time, she has continued to tackle the complicated task of keeping track of all 500 volunteer’s hours each year. United Way appreciates her long-term commitment!  She has done other volunteer work for other agencies, for varying lengths of time, over the past ten years. These include being an adult tutor for the Marathon County Literacy Council, front desk help at The Women’s Community, office assistant at The Monk Botanical Gardens and working in the gardens at Leigh Yawkey Art Museum.

Jane and her husband Mike have been involved, as a team, as a “Big Couple” for several years, as they spent time with a child through Big Brothers Big Sisters.  Reading to students was also a team effort at Weston Elementary in years past, and now each are reading, once a week in Mosinee and Marathon, to Kindergarten and 1st grade students through the United Way Reading Buddy program.

Her fun-loving spirit comes out as she tells stories of the cute things her students say, or as she talks about the chance to go through a corn maze, to local theatre performances and other children’s events which she wouldn’t have done without taking her “little brother”.
Viewing the volunteer experiences each as their own adventure is a good perspective to have.  Just as on a vacation one may visit new places, meet new people and try new foods, trying a new agency or role is fun and interesting.  One may decide to stay, or linger at one destination, or pass along quickly in a place that just isn’t enjoyed as much.

Jane says “Put yourself out there or you will sit home and do nothing.  Just try something and if it is not working, move on. There are too many things you could be doing that will be a good fit! There is a wealth of opportunities out there”.  United Way Volunteer Connection and United Way RSVP are here to help you along your volunteer journey.

Thanks to Jane’s positive and flexible attitude, mixed with some humor and her skills of organization and attention to detail, many agencies have benefitted from her service. Thank you, Jane!!
